PoliceOne.com, Hacked. A web forum which was only used by verified law enforcement officials, has been hacked and data is on for sale in a dark web market.
In an online posting, a person using the screen name Cthulhu said he or she had released the files after receiving them from a source who wished to remain anonymous. The anonymous source requested to make all the information public “in light of an ever increasing divide between the police groups and the citizens of the US”.
A hacker stealing 715,000 members’ accounts, including FBI and DHS staff.
PoliceOne.com is popular law enforcement forum for verified police officials only. Apparently, these accounts were hacked in 2015.
What it includes:
According to a post on dark web marketplace, the stolen data includes private files belonging to Americas biggest police union of 2.5 GB size. Which includes following information
1. Username and passwords stored in MD5 (an algorithm that nowadays is easy to crack)
2. Email addresses
3. Dates of birth
4. Other forum data, such as if a member is a verified law enforcement officer.
FBI was investigating the incident. The union’s national site, fop.net, remained offline on Thursday evening.
